Best Volunteer Experience in Provo, Turks n Caicos

I know what you are thinking... What the heck is a "Potcake K9"? Well, this is a mixed breed street pooch that is found on most Caribbean islands. Why is this important, you may ask? BECAUSE they are wandering every where on the streets, searching for food and pets... AND there is this wonderful non-profit organization in Grace Bay, Provo that I just HAVE to talk about.

Henry @ Grace Bay Beach

So here I am wandering the tourist area of Provo and come across the Saltmills Plaza with a bunch of boutique stores, a dive shop and a bike rental shop, when I see a fully windowed store and a bunch of furry faces looking up at me.

I glance up to the sign and see "Potcake Place K9 Rescue."

I look back through the window to all these wagging tailed and plump bellied puppies and I instinctively reach for the door handle and waltz on in.

I come to learn that this is a fully volunteer operation! A dog rescue charity to help relieve the amount of stray dogs on the island. They focus on rescuing puppies as they are (as we all know) more popular to adopt and they still have the chance to be properly socialized with humans that they are comfortable and learn to adore being the sole companion to a master. But they also rescue mama dogs and other adult strays they can.

All of the volunteers there are extremely friendly and very passionate about the work that they are doing. You can tell they have fallen in love with each and every puppy that they rescue.

What is amazing for YOU - the animal-loving tourist, is that they allow you, actually no they ENCOURAGE you to come on in and have some cuddle time with these puppies. They are open Monday to Saturday from 10am-4pm.

This little girl is named DB.

If you arrive before 10am you can actually take a puppy out for the first half of the day! (I would advise arriving around 9:30am though, as they can get a lot of visitors and only have so many puppies). This is an important way to help support and volunteer for this non-profit organization, as these puppies need to experience outside of the shelter and also are in need of human socialization!

One of my many visits to the shelter, I decided to take a pup out for a half-day! (However, don't go telling my two pups waiting for me at home or they will be EXTREMELY jealous!!!). I got paired with a 10 week-old male, black puppy named Henry! At first, he was this sleepy, licky boy who wanted its head supported at all times. But once we got him on the beach, his little personality came out to play! Running around and checking out every possible smell. Also the digging!!! - Constantly digging in the sand, rolling around getting as dirty as possible, as you can see in the photos below. (Sorry in advance to the volunteers who have to wash him after).

Henry the full time cuddle bug and digger.

The volunteers send you out with everything you need to care for them for a few hours including: leash, harness, treats (these are a MUST, very food oriented of course), toys, water, and a bowl!

I highly recommend this experience. If you are planning a day to relax on the Grace Bay beach, why not bring a cuddly puppy along?

Hi, thanks for dropping by!

I've been around the world a few times and I plan to continue to do so. Exploring and experiencing new things is my main focus in life.

I aim to share my experiences with those that are keen explorers like myself.

Through landscape, wildlife and travel photography I get to take a moment of a certain experience with me every where I go. My goal is for YOU to hopefully get an inkling of inspiration from one of my prints. Maybe just enough inspiration that you’ll hang it on your bedroom or living room wall until you find the time of your life where you can get up and explore that place in the picture.

The second goal here is to provide some information so you aren’t totally lost once you get to said destination. And maybe YOU will be special enough that I will even share my hidden gems and travel tricks.
